The America GS 3.8 Hardtop Roadster was built a few years after Dr. Porsche's 80th birthday present, the Panamericana. With that extra time, Herr Lagaay (H. Lagaay, retired Chief Stylist of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG) was able to devise a different exterior color, multi-color hand silk-screened primary leather, accent secondary leather, colored seat belts and zipper for the America GS — which he (and I) thought more than successful than the Panamericana. Hence, while both cars have a type of green on the exterior, they are quite different and the interiors are also quite individual.

Great car, but that interior is hideous.
![]() 08/10/2014 at 18:49 |
|
I know.
I'm able to justify it though, with the fact it includes typical bold Porsche colors and takes the clash to the next level (much like the car) to not only include the outside world, but itself. Outrageous.
![]() 08/10/2014 at 18:59 |

The car is awesome, but the purple interior accents let it down. They look as cheap as plastidip in a car like this.

Why on earth would you by a 1 of 1 Porsche and then change absolutely everything on it? ... and only drive it 350 miles. I appreciate the engineering, but there is some serious crazy going on here. Automatic? Cabriolet? That all made sense per the original vision, but not to build the ultimate track Porsche. The owner got this extremely rare one of a kind Porsche and decided to build it into something wholly different than the original vision, thereby losing the appeal of originality and resulting in a formula that very few people could make sense of.

lol because 1992. Chili Peppers were still good, rappers still wore the fade, and everybody was still colorblind from the 80's

A nod to the Panamericana concept (see the detail on the roof).

I have to agree whole-heartedly..
This jackwagon totally ruined (is in the process of ruining) a one of one Porsche? If you're into all this carbon, purple painted shit, etc... get a 996 to turn into a late 80's rapper-mobile

There's a guy in NC that's a HUGE Porsche collector. Can't remember his name but he owns an insane amount of awesome cars. I've seen his cars at VIR a few times for historic sports car racing. Could be his I suppose.

No joke——I still have the issue of European car that this car was featured in back in 1992, and the only reason I kept it was because of this car. Thanks for the memories.

Hell, I'm sold by the choice of color.
![]() 08/13/2014 at 17:13 |

Oh yeah, and one detail I recall. The seatbelts were $6000 because they had to commission an entire bulk reel of the webbing material just to get these.

It takes a singular dedication to so comprehensively ruin a car.

I freelance for a 911-centric magazine. I need, need, need to feature this car.
Now I just need, need, need to figure out how to get a hold of this dude.
![]() 08/13/2014 at 17:16 |

Nah, it's totally period-cool. I dig it. I mean, I wouldn't want it in something newer, but it's just about perfect for a 1992 car.

![]() 08/13/2014 at 17:21 |

The exterior and interior colors make that car look like it was definitely made in 1992. God that shade of blue is fugly!
![]() 08/13/2014 at 17:22 |
|
yeah.... they had me until the purple on turquoise. which shouldn't be a color OR a word.
![]() 08/13/2014 at 17:22 |

Wow. Carbon brakes in those days cost all the money.
![]() 08/13/2014 at 17:22 |

I just don't understand. The owner upgraded the car through the years with the best technology available... and never drives it? "As of 2005 the car had 350 miles on it" Cameron Frye's dad thinks this guy needs to lighten up.
![]() 08/13/2014 at 17:23 |
|
Same. If I ever got a C4 Corvette it'd need to be teal or purple. Cars should be in period colors, this reminds me of every trapper keeper I had in elementary school in the late 80's early 90's.

I don't think most understand the background of this car or the owner though. There is a multi-page forum on Rennlist about it if you want to explore further, but essentially, this was not some dude wrapping original Porsche parts with CF wrap from AutoZone, this was an engineering partnership between Mr. Linton and Porsche to push the limits of vehicle design and manufacturing using emerging racing technology for theoretical road applications. Linton owns a small, boutique engineering firm that works with numerous race teams as well as manufacturers, and the America GS has essentially been a rolling test bed for the last 20 years. Virtually everything has been done with Porsche's blessing and with feedback given to Porsche, including, yes, that non-Jalop choice of a tiptronic transmission. Yes, the interior is hideous, but that is a product of the era. To anyone who knows the history of this car and Mr. Linton, the on-going modifications will do nothing to affect appreciation over the years (if it ever gets into private hands). If you want to see a truly beautiful car, you should see his 1 of 1 factory 930 Flachbau.

I reckon it's like the thing where tailor made suits often had garish linings for a while, as a subtle way of showing off that your suit was tailor made. That's stopped now with high end suits, because high street brands started doing it too, but that's completely irrelevant and I have no idea why I bothered to type it.

Mods to a car are like makeup to a woman:
1. Some don't need any.
2. Most can benefit from a little.
3. Some need a lot.
4. At some point, there is such a thing as too much, and you destroy any chance of further improvement.
Examples: This car. Pamela Anderson.

Came here to say that. This car is a prime example of why you don't get trendy or insanely overly trendy when making big purchases unless you will die with them.
Granted, the specific 911 cost explosion (and general Porsche growth) will protect this owner, but one in a million.

I wouldn't be surprised, as soon as I saw the interior I looked for a NC plate and when I found the plate it all made sense to me, until their owner nearly killed basketball in Charlotte in the late 90's the Hornets were the in fashion team with guys like Larry Johnson and his whole Mama routine, kinda like Kyrie Irving's old man thing with Pepsi Max, but very 90's. I would be more surprised if the interior WASN'T inspired by the Hornets, because then it would be odd.

The Panamericana concept, built three years earlier, had the same accent color. I doubt if anyone involved with that project knew anything about the Charlotte Hornets.
